In praise of barefoot!

Rupert is a big Dutch warm blood and in 2019 I had the devastating news that he had navicular and the prognosis was pretty much the worst any horse owner would dread. I could maybe make him field sound with painkillers.

In desperation I sought the support and knowledge of an American group called Barefoot for Navicular. But at just under 18hh I was told by the people around me that he would never be able to go barefoot. He was too big and his feet wouldn’t cope.

Undeterred I was recommended to speak to Michael Johnson a local farrier. We spoke for a long time and he said he believed in barefoot care and would support me and Rupert on our journey.

And what a journey it has been!

The first week without shoes was hard for the horse to understand how to walk without shoes. I cried. Michael said we he can do this. A plan was put in place to help him - but it wasn’t needed. By week 2, he was comfortable.

Michael came to see him very regularly and to do short trims.

Each month he improved. Each year the vet and Michael would look at x-rays and any tweaks in trimming were incorporated into his care.

I have a very happy - very sound horse. We started low level competing last year and now it is onwards and upwards.

Massive, massive shout out to Michael Johnson. This could not have been achieved without your expertise and support. Massive shout out too to the person who recommended him to me. All of my horses are very ‘happy feet barefoot horses’
